When I was a Democrat

When I think about liberals and how to persuade them of the truth, I go back to the past when I was a radical liberal Democrat, anti-war, anti-rich, etc. and try and devise talking points to change their minds as mine has been changed. It's not an easy task since once the change is made, it is hard to go back to that type of thinking.

Over 18 years ago, I was a dead broke alcholic, mad at the world because of my situation. After all, was I not a nice guy, a single guy trying to split time with my ex-wife to raise our daughter and make a living. The world was against me as I drove around in my beat-up Chevy Sprint shooting black smoke out the tailpipe delivering newspapers in the early morning and pizzas in the evening. Up to that point I had voted Democrat in every single election and my situation had not improved, no matter whether Democrats or Republicans were elected.

Make no mistake. I am not blaming either political party for my situation... not now. But at the time I wanted to punish those rich guys that were keeping me down, not willing to look at alcohol or my attitude as being the cause of my dilemna. In other words, I was the problem.

In 1989 I had an epihphany and realized that I was the master of my destiny. I can't explain how it came about, but after years of listening to tapes of Dr. Dennis Waitley, Dr. Wayne Dyer and other Nightingale-Conant motivational speakers, something clicked. Regardless of who I voted for, I was responsible for the good and the bad things in my life. That's when my life started to improve. If I was responsible for the bad things, then I could also make things better if I chose to. One of those secrets was blame.

"Losers fix the blame... winners fix what caused the problem" is one of my favorite truisms. Politics is all about blame, don't you agree? And the news is all about pointing to who is to blame (Katrina). And regardless of what the truth is, Republicans are usually named. If it's a Democrat the party affiliation is usually way down in the story. Check it out and you will see I am telling the truth. If it's a Republican it's on or near the front page. If it's a Democrat, it's usually buried.

Recently my column has come under fire by liberals who hate free speech. One of my buddies over at ww.FedUpNetwork.com got a note from some liberal who accused him of being in bed with the oil companies. How absurd. So if you support more drilling to bring down gas prices for you and your family, you must be a oil hack, right? What does that make people who don't support drilling? In bed with enviro-Nazis? No. In that same e-mail I was called a lot of nasty names because I say what I believe. Tough. I am not going to shut up. The truth is the truth, not the truth because of WHO says it.

For example, headlines say, "Bush administration suffers setback as courts rule for terrorists" or something like that. The truth is, doesn't the United States suffer, not just Bush? Isn't that a setback for you and me? I think so. Of course, there are a lot of people who live here and have had it so easy that they can afford to be anti-American. Nothing has been required of them. They sit back with their trust funds and support the liberal causes because it makes them feel good to give money to these wonderful causes, never looking at the results that come from them. It's EASY to sit back and call our heroes in the military horrible names and accuse them of committing unspeakable acts without a single shred of evidence or accuse oil executives of gouging consumers or manipulating gasoline prices without knowing the first thing about economics or the oil industry.

I will expand on this in days to come.
